Architecture & Heritage

The buildings of Hawke’s Bay have become an attraction in their own right, ever since the region’s twin cities were decimated in 1931 and rebuilding began.

in 1931a massive earthquake struck Hawke’s Bay, devastating central Napier and causing spread damage in Hastings and beyond.

In the depths of the great Depression, Napier was rebuilt in two years in the style of the thirties and now has one of the largest concentrations of Art Deco architecture anywhere in the world. Hastings was also damaged severely in the earthquake and has its own unique concentration of Spanish Mission and Art Deco.

Today, Art Deco and Spanish Mission architecture symbolise the region’s ability to overcome disaster. Locals and visitors alike celebrate the success by revelling in the architecture heritage of Hawke’s Bay. There are guided and self guided walking tours, on-going museum exhibitions and annual celebrations.
