Hawke's Bay Beaches

From Mahia Peninsula to Porangahau the Hawke Bay coastline caters for all water activities from fishing and diving, to surfing and sea kayaking or simply lying on the sun drenched beach.

Mahia Peninsula in Northern Hawke’s Bay is a mecca for fishermen, surfers and divers. Ocean Beach and Waimarama are only a short 20-30 minute journey from Hastings past the trout laden Tukituki River and nearby wineries. The two beaches are long with golden sand and are popular for surfing and boogie boarding. Waimarama has many kiwi baches (some available to rent), a shop with petrol and a boat ramp.

Between Napier and Hastings are the seaside villages of Haumoana and Te Awanga, which have a great local art scene. They are the gateway to Cape Kidnappers and are popular with surfers when large easterly swells move into the Bay. North of Napier is Waipatiki and Tangoio Beaches. Waipatiki has a camping ground and there are several bush and coastal walks in the area.

Central Hawke’s Bay beaches are well worth a visit and are a popular day trip from Napier or Hastings. Beaches to visit include Pourere, Blackhead, Aramoana, Karakau and Porangahau. The beaches are great for all water based activities with Porangahau especially popular for its seafood and weekend craft shows. Te Anagiangi Marine Reserve offers a great way to see the local sea life. The reserve covers an area of about 1.3 square nautical miles (446 hectares), extending one nautical mile offshore from mean high water mark between Blackhead and Aramoana beaches.

It is important to check with lifeguards regarding the swimming conditions and flags are displayed when the beaches are closed. Surf patrolled beaches in summer are at Westshore and Marine Parade in Napier and at Ocean Beach and Waimarama. Care is needed when swimming at any beach.

The sun in Hawke’s Bay can be harsh with burn times of just 10 minutes in Summer. It is important that you use sun block and wear protective clothing when out of the shade.
