Key Facts and Figures For the year ending December 2006 The Ministry of Tourism estimates there were 2.2 million visitor arrivals to Hawke’s Bay. Of the 2.2 million visitor arrivals 48% were day visitors and 52% were overnight visitors. Domestic visitors accounted for 86% of all visits to Hawke’s Bay and international visitors 14% of visits. Holiday visitors accounted for 40% of visits, visits to friends and relatives 29% of visits, business 17% of visits, education 2% of visits and other purposes 12% of visits. Total expenditure in Hawke’s Bay is estimated to have been $307 million – 72% by domestic visitors and 28% was spent by international visitors.
Day Visitors Of the 1.06 million day visitors to Hawke’s Bay, 95% were domestic visitors and 5% were international visitors. Holiday visitors accounted for 37% of visits, visits to friends and relatives 24.5%, business visits 24.5%, education 2% of visits, and other purposes 12% of visits. Visitor expenditure by day visitors is estimated to have been $62 million – 97% was spent by domestic visitors and 3% by international visitors.
Overnight Visitors Of the 1.1 million overnight visitors to Hawke’s Bay, 80% were domestic visitors and 20% international. Holiday visitors accounted for 42% of visits, visits to friends and relatives 34%, business visits 11%, education 2% and other purposes 11% of visits. Visitor expenditure by overnight visitors is estimated to have been $244 million – 67% was spent by domestic visitors and 33% by international visitors.
The 1.1 million overnight visitors to Hawke’s Bay are estimated to have stayed an average 3.2 nights and are collectively estimated to have spent 3.6 million visitor nights in Hawke’s Bay.
Commercial Accommodation There was an estimated 488,131 visitor arrivals to Hawke’s Bay’s commercial accommodation, each visitor staying an average of 2.05 nights for a collective stay of 998,569 visitor nights.
Private Accommodation There were an estimated 716,194 visitor arrivals to Hawke’s Bay’s private homes, school camps, maraes, holiday homes and long term accommodation, each visitor staying an average of 4.2 nights for a collective stay of 2.7 million visitor nights.
Markets Domestic Visitors were estimated to comprise 87% of visitor arrivals in Hawke’s Bay and international visitors made up the remaining 23% of visitor arrivals.
Hawke’s Bay’s largest domestic markets were Auckland (275,309 visitors) Wellington (199,162 visitors) and Manawatu/Wanganui (164, 716 visitors).
Hawke’s Bay’s largest international markets were: Australia (88,601 visitors), United Kingdom (78,105 visitors) and America (44,304 visitors).
In Hawke’s Bay commercial accommodation 23.5% of visitor nights are by international visitors and 76.5% of visitor nights are by domestic visitors.
