The Great New Zealand Touring Route
The Great New Zealand Touring Route website is now online - a great resource for planning itineraries for the Free and Independent Traveller.
The Great New Zealand Touring Route offers the opportunity to experience the very best of the North Island in one compact area while following two well-established themed touring routes, Pacific Coast Highway and Thermal Explorer Highway.
The Great New Zealand Touring Route is the only place in New Zealand where you can experience everything from beaches to snowy capped mountains, not to mention the geothermal areas, rain forest, Maori culture, adventure and wineries along the way.
The Pacific Coast Highway traverses the spectacular east coast of New Zealand's North Island. Linking Auckland, Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, the East Cape and Hawke’s Bay Wine Country, the Pacific Coast Highway travels through a unique region where land and sea intermingle.
The return journey to Auckland takes on the Thermal Explorer Highway from Hawke’s Bay through the centre of the North Island into areas Lake Taupo, Ruapehu, Rotorua and Waikato. The region is abundant with crystal clear lakes and streams, natural spas, skifields, geothermal activity, Maori culture, wineries and many underground cave mysteries.

The Classic New Zealand Wine Trail (CNZWT) just keeps getting better and better!
The addition of Nelson is just one of a number of refinements made to the CNZWT, which has been widely hailed as one of the best ways to experience New Zealand.
The route begins in Hawke’s Bay Wine Country, travels through Tararua and into the fertile plains of Wairarapa. It continues on to New Zealand’s vibrant capital, Wellington, across Cook Strait into Marlborough Sounds and finishes in Nelson.
It brings together more than 70 percent of New Zealand’s wine production, the country’s finest food, great culture, outdoor adventure and boutique accommodation - all in a unique self-drive experience spanning several days.
The Spectator – one of the United Kingdom’s foremost news magazines – describes the CNZWT as an excellent option for British travellers. “The part of New Zealand covered by the trail is far less touristy but no less enjoyable [than the usual tourist route], the distances aren’t long and the wine and food are of staggering quality
The CNZWT has become a joint venture between Hawke’s Bay, Tararua and Centre Stage of New Zealand (a macro region consisting of Wairarapa, Wellington, Regional Wellington, Marlborough and Nelson).
